A Grand Old Age

For most people, the thought of ageing conjures up negatives aplenty. Too few realise that there are wonderful positives that balance the equation. Being aware of the good and focussing on it enriches your elder years, improving your quality of life and peace of mind.

One of the true wonders of ageing is not caring about what people think, bringing an end to a lifetime of pleasing people. It is a time for pleasing yourself and your loved ones. Studies show that seniors are amongst the happiest groups of people, significantly more so than the middle-aged. A large part of that is being comfortable in your own skin and enjoying the freedom to be you.

Having more time to yourself can lead to rewarding years as you follow your dreams. As the novelist George Elliot wrote: “It’s never too late to be what you might have become.” Dreams and passions that may have been put on hold because of life’s responsibilities are back on the table. You’d be surprised at how many novels are written after the age of 80!

One thing no one misses as they get older is pressure. No deadlines, no late nights working, no morning rush. The world’s expectations on you to produce and work hard dissipate into the steam from a teapot. The pressure of looking perfect and dressing the part is flipped on its head, replaced by comfort and cosiness. In Japanese culture, old age is understood as a time of spring or rebirth after a busy life. Take hold of it with both hands and relish it. You’ve earned it.

While no one is saying growing old is a breeze, it is vital that we celebrate it. This simple action will change your mindset and empower you to defy expectations. As this happens, self-esteem is raised, which it turns out is essential to your health. Research has linked cortisol to self-esteem levels in later years. As one increases, the other decreases. Focussing on the good things in your life and enjoying them with confidence ultimately leads to better health.

Finally, being comfortable in your own skin, self-confident and happy, you have better social skills and empathy than any earlier version of yourself. This is important to avoid and overcome the isolation and loneliness that is prevalent in elder years.

At Le Domaine Care, we prioritise social time and building relationships. With social activities throughout the week, everyone is part of the community and never truly alone. We know how important the friendships shared between our residents are, becoming a daily source of strength and comfort as they face old age together. There are many challenges and difficulties, but the joys of life are shared equally.
